The New York Historical Society has 133 photographs in their Arthur W. Grumbine Photograph Collection. Biographical Note ( New York Historical Society) Arthur W. Grumbine was born in Cleona, Pennsylvania in 1901, a fifth-generation descendant of Leonard Krumbein who had immigrated to Philadelphia in 1754. Grumbine had a public school education but left high school after one year to take a job as a telegraph operator with the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. He remained in that field, eventually taking a job with Western Union and rising in positions of increasing responsibility through 1943. Grumbine had an interest in photograph from childhood. He built his first camera from a discarded cigar box at age twelve, and purchased his first commercial camera, a folding Kodak, once he found full-time employment. From his first roll of film, he did all of his own developing and printing. While in his thirties, Grumbine became more serious about making pictures, submitting his work to a number of national and international juried exhibitions in which he won more than two dozen awards and prizes. Grumbine's success as an amateur photographer made his professional transition into that field somewhat a natural progression. When a friend working in research at the Photo Products Department of Dupont suggested he apply for a position there, Grumbine took the opportunity to rethink his twenty-five year career in telegraphy and jumped at the offer. At age 42 he accepted an entry-level assignment in one of the company's research laboratories; twenty-three years and four promotions later, Grumbine retired from Dupont with five United States and twenty international patents to his name. His work was primarily centered in commercially produced film for the pre-computerized printing industry, particularly with the development and refinement of Dupont's Rotofilm and Screen Process Film. Arthur Grumbine died in 1998 in Reading, Pennsylvania. Five years prior to his death he gave his first gift of photographs to The New-York Historical Society, at which time he also wrote a twelve-page autobiography for the Society's files. He was proud of his accomplishments both in telegraphy and with Dupont, writing of the latter "[m]y career with Dupont was not unlike that of a male version of Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland combined." This allusion would appear to extend to his fondness for the city of New York. "Much of my weekend spare time was spend roaming around every neighborhood in Manhattan searching for interesting picture material. It was like a hiking tour of the world. I miss it."

Endymion’s parentage varies among the different ancient references and stories, but several traditions say that he was originally the king of Elis. According to one tradition, Zeus offered him anything that he might desire, and Endymion chose an everlasting sleep in which he might remain youthful forever. According to another version of the myth, Endymion’s eternal sleep was a punishment inflicted by Zeus because he had attempted to have a sexual relationship with Zeus’s wife, Hera. In any case, Endymion was loved by Selene, the goddess of the moon, who visited him every night while he lay asleep in a cave on Mount Latmus in Caria; she bore him 50 daughters. A common form of the myth represents Endymion as having been put to sleep by Selene herself so that she might enjoy his beauty undisturbed.

Blade ricasso marked Alexander Coppell, ACS with scales, Solingen. and 118 with eagle marks. Blade edge marked with the number 3. Matching number 9535 and AC/G on hilt. Scabbard 29 3/8" approx. Sword 33 3/8" approx. 34 5/8" sword and scabbard, ca WWII. The Coppel family that Alexander (third generation, son of Gustav) headed were regarded just as highly as human beings as they were succesful entrepreneurs. They donated millions of marks to charity. Out of their own pockets built an orphanage, a school for the disadvantaged, and a recreation center. Their plants had recreational facilities for their workers. Some members of the family, including Alexander, became elected officials to fight for social issues. They headed various social rights groups. They were leading citizens of Solingen. In 2005 a street in Solingen was named after Alexander Coppel. The family was Jewish and the company was Aryanized in 1936. Some of the family had already escaped to Switzerland in 1934. Alexander Coppel and his family were sent to a concentration camp in 1941 along with the remaining Solingen Jews. He died there of starvation in 1942 at the age of 77.

Farny 97 Attributed as signed to HENRY FRANÇOIS FARNY (American, 1847-1916) ca 1897. 7 1/4 x 10 1/2" painting on board. Framed 12 3/4 x 14 1/2" This could be original artwork for a magazine or book. Painter, illustrator. Farny was attracted to Indians as a boy in Warren, Pennsylvania, his family's first residence in America after leaving France in 1853. Another move took him to Cincinnati, where Farny remained until 1866, when he found a job in New York as an engraver and cartoonist for Harper's Monthly. Over the next ten years, he went abroad three times, studying in Rome, Düsseldorf, and Munich. On the last trip, he was accompanied by fellow Cincinnatians Frank Duveneck and John Twachtman. In 1881, inspired by the developing market for Indian paintings, Farny traveled up the Missouri River, making sketches, taking notes and photography, and collecting artifacts. On several more trips West he did the same, until his Cincinnati studio contained enough material for almost any Indian subject he wished to illustrate. Many of his oil paintings were done after 1893, in a style that combined his documentary skills with a nostalgia or vanishing western tribes. Henry François Farny (1847–1916) was a prominent artist and illustrator best known for his paintings and illustrations of the American West and Native American life. His work appeared in various publications and books, often illustrating stories about the frontier and indigenous peoples. Steward (American, 1844-1927), primitive still life oil on board, depicting a trout hanging from a nail on a faux birch background, signed and dated S. W. Steward -01- 9 1/4 x 4 1/8" Writing on back appears to read Mr. R. D. Benson, etc. Seth Steward who was well known for his portrayals of Moosehead Lake, Maine among other outdoor subjects and wildlife portrayals. Paintings created for sportsmen must have been lucrative, as his son Walter followed suit painting Pickerel and Brook Trout with faux birch backgrounds on board. It is well established that they exhibited their work together in the late 1800's, early 1900's at shows such as the Sportsman's Exhibition Association in New York. Such shows would attract Maine sporting camp owners and fishing guides.

283 - 1928 Nigger to Nigger ECL Adams Historical Book Please note: This is an historical and highly rare Black American antiquarian book. NIGGER TO NIGGER by E. C. L. Adams First Edition, Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1928. Appears to be a first printing. 'The negroes of the swamps which extend for forty miles along the Congaree River in South Carolina represent probably the purest present day survival in America of the African type. Superstitions brought from Africa have merged with the dimly remembered terrors of slave days'. The author was a white physician living in South Carolina. "Adams’s books and stories about the African American residents of lower Richland County brought him both regional and national attention as an author who was able to present the black dialect with great precision, and also as a white author who unhesitatingly portrayed the hardships of racial prejudice in the 1920s and 1930s. His first volume, Congaree Sketches, was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1927. Here he introduced the poor blacks of the Congaree swamp and their meticulously rendered dialect that would form the imaginative foundation for the many stories that followed. Nigger to Nigger, appeared under the prestigious Scribner’s imprint in 1928. The chairperson of the board of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Mary White Ovington, who had earlier remarked on the high quality of Adams’s insights into the mind of African Americans in Congaree Sketches, also admired nigger to nigger for its poignant descriptions of the tragic lives of its poor black characters" Adams, Edward Clarkson Leverett (1876-1946)
